8 of the Best Healthcare Jobs You Should Consider Training for

If you’re wondering which healthcare jobs you could train up for, check out this handy blog post. It’ll give you plenty more information on the subject!

You’ve seen them on TV. There’s a good chance that one of them has been instrumental in restoring your health or helping a loved one. We’re talking about nurses and other healthcare professionals.

Working in the healthcare industry is hugely rewarding, and there are a lot more career options than becoming a doctor.

Here, we’re breaking down eight great healthcare jobs you should consider if you want to work in this field.

1. Registered Nurse

Besides being a doctor, this is probably one of the best-known jobs in the healthcare industry.

A registered nurse (RN) is technically a broad classification that can cover a variety of specialized nursing fields. In general, an RN is someone who completed at least an associate’s degree in nursing and has passed the nursing exam.

From there, an RN can go on to get training in a specialized area, such as emergency care or neonatal care.

The duties of a registered nurse vary based on what they’re training. In general, they assist doctors with procedures, provide direct care to patients, and offer guidance to family members. They may also administer medications.

2. Dental Assistant

Much like an RN, dental assistants do a variety of tasks to help ensure that a dental practice runs smoothly.

For example, they may work directly with patients before the dentist sees them, help patients schedule appointments, and maintain office records.

As you might guess, they most often work in dental practices, usually full-time. Some dental assistants work in nursing homes, hospitals, and even schools.

3. Pharmacist/Pharmacy Technician

You only see a pharmacist when they hand over your medication, but in fact, pharmacists do a great deal more than that.

Pharmacists help ensure that patients get the medicines they need. This involves a careful attention to detail and coordinating communication with the prescriber to ensure they’ve given the correct dosage and formulation.

In addition, a pharmacist is instrumental in ensuring a patient’s health. They have to check a patient’s record each time a new prescription is filled to prevent harmful interactions. Plus, they counsel the patient on the best course of action.

4. Paramedic

A paramedic is a healthcare professional responsible for administering emergency care, including advanced life support. They’re responsible for responding to emergencies and assessing urgent medical needs so that they can stabilize patients until a doctor can treat them.

Paramedics should not be confused with an EMT, though the jobs are related.

Both are trained in emergency procedures, such as administering glucose to diabetics, providing oxygen, or treating an asthma attack. However, EMTs are not permitted to provide medical treatment that involves breaking the skin.

Paramedics, on the other hand, receive far more advanced medical training and have an extensive knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, cardiology, medications, and medical procedures.

5. Phlebotomist

A phlebotomist is one of those job titles you don’t hear mentioned that much, which is a shame because it’s a fun word (and a very important job in the medical field).

This healthcare professional is responsible for drawing blood from patients for a number of reasons, from routine tests to research and blood transfusions.

Because of this, phlebotomists most often work in hospitals, laboratories, and blood donor facilities. Due to the nature of their work, they must have excellent hand-eye coordination, a talent for tracking details, and excellent interpersonal skills to keep a patient calm and comfortable.

6. Medical Records Technicians

You’ve heard people say that you need to go to the doctor to build a medical history, but did it ever occur to you who actually puts your medical record into writing?

Medical records and health information technicians are responsible for making sure that medical data is clear, well-organized, and up-to-date. This allows doctors to make an informed decision about how to proceed with each patient.

Typically, technicians input data and ensure that patient information is kept confidential and secure. They need strong technical and analytical skills, a high degree of personal integrity, and a strong attention to detail.

7. Home Health Aides/Patient Care Technicians

Patient care technicians are responsible for dealing with patients on a direct, one-on-one basis.

In particular, home health aides help people with daily activities and medical needs, especially those with severe chronic illnesses, disabilities, or other impairments. Because of this, home health aides often work directly in a patient’s home.

Since they work with patients directly, they need to have the stamina and physical strength necessary to assist them with certain tasks. They also need to be able to pay close attention to detail since the patient is relying on them for medical care.

Most importantly, aides must have strong interpersonal skills and integrity to make patients feel comfortable, safe, and secure. They also need to be able to deal with different personality types and emotional reactions.

8. Clinical Laboratory Technician

Finally, a clinical laboratory technician works to collect and analyze various medical samples.

The specific work they do depends on the particular job title of the technician in question. In general, these professionals analyze samples of bodily fluids and tissues from various parts of the body.

This is a crucial job for all aspects of medicine, from preventative care to prenatal care. Technicians are often the ones running the diagnostic tests that doctors need in order to know how to proceed with treatment.

Because of this, a clinical laboratory technician should be comfortable working with technology to run a wide variety of clinical tests. They also need to be able to keep track of several small details at once.
